Press release February 2018

On Saturday 17th February 2018 a very special event took place on the 17th Anniversary of the time when superb renovations of the Memorial Hall were completed. Friends and supporters came together to enjoy a variety of delicious home-made cakes and to remember those volunteers who gave so much time and effort to ensure the success of the Hall, but have, sadly, since died. Helene Haythorne, the Mayor of Pickering, unveiled a plaque commemorating those intrepid supporters.

In speaking about their invaluable contribution, she also mentioned the Hall’s latest venture in which, in conjunction with the Town Council, a defibrillator has been installed in the Hall foyer. Trustees, Staff, Town Councillors and Pickering Youth Council members have been trained in the use of the defibrillator, which is available for visitors to the Hall and any members of the general public who may need it. During the get-together on Saturday morning many of the guests were delighted with the display of scrap books, photographs, newspaper cuttings and artifacts relating to the renovation project which was so ably managed between 1995 and 2001 under the direction of Bill and Angie McCall and their hard-working team of volunteers. Many of Saturday’s visitors were able to identify with this time in the Hall’s history and some were able to relate their own stories of the transition period.
During the past seventeen years the Hall, which belongs to the people of Pickering and is managed on their behalf by a team of Trustees, has gone from strength to strength. The modern, accessible and compliant facilities are available for all to use at very reasonable rates. As one guest remarked on Saturday, “It’s quite amazing that the Beckett room at the Hall can still be hired by local residents for only £6.00 per hour”. Trustees are always willing to listen to new ideas and welcome volunteers with open arms! Should anyone have any suggestions about how we can improve our services or would like to offer any help at all, please contact the Hall on 01751 477522 or telephone Mal Danks, secretary to the Trustees on 01751477913 or 07956 658894.
